Shark Air Purifiers UK: NeverChange5 HP072UK (2026)
Updated: October 2026 · Shark UK air purifier range · Prices checked 18 Oct 2026
The 5-year filter claim — three scenarios
Shark's key marketing point for the HP072UK is that the NeverChange filter lasts up to 5 years (60 months), compared to 6–12 months for most competitors. This is an extraordinary claim. We examine it under three usage scenarios to show what the actual 3-year cost looks like in each case.
| Scenario | Filter interval | Filter cost/yr | Electricity/yr | 3-yr TCO |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Optimistic (Shark claim) | 60 months (5 years) | £10.00 | £32.19 | £426.56 |
| Realistic (heavy use) | 30 months (2.5 years) | ~£20.00 | £32.19 | ~£456 |
| Pessimistic (pet/smoke use) | 18 months (1.5 years) | ~£33.33 | £32.19 | ~£506 |
Unit price £299.99 included in all TCO figures. Electricity at Ofgem 24.5p/kWh (Q1 2026), 12 h/day, 30W typical. Filter replacement price £49.99.
The important variable is the word "up to" in Shark's 5-year claim. Filter life in air purifiers is primarily a function of pollutant load — if you have pets, smoke indoors, or live near a road with significant particulate traffic, the filter will saturate faster. Shark's own filter-life indicator (based on usage and air quality data via the app) will tell you when the filter is due. In low-pollution homes with moderate use, 5 years is achievable. In a London flat with pets and open windows, it may be substantially shorter.

CADR and noise — two honest caveats
CADR: Shark quotes 200 CFM (340 m³/h) but this is manufacturer-stated, not AHAM-verified. Shark's claimed room coverage of 56 m² on the product listing is based on a different ACH calculation than our 3 ACH standard — we calculate 22 m² at 3 ACH with a 2.4 m ceiling. Shark's claimed 56 m² implies a much lower ACH target, which is only appropriate in low-pollution environments. For allergen reduction and effective air cleaning, we use 3 ACH as the minimum standard.
Noise: At 32 dB in sleep mode, the HP072UK is louder than most competitors in this review set. The Coway Airmega Mighty achieves 24 dB; the Airmega 150 is 20 dB. For bedroom use, 32 dB may be audible for light sleepers. Shark does not compete on noise; its differentiation is the filter longevity claim.
Verdict — who should buy the Shark HP072UK
The HP072UK is the right choice if:
- You are in a low-to-moderate pollution environment and confident the 5-year filter claim will hold
- You want to minimise the inconvenience of filter replacement — the genuine advantage of the NeverChange design
- Noise is not a priority (bedroom placement is not ideal at 32 dB)
- You do not require certified filtration (Allergy UK, ECARF, EN 1822) for clinical or allergy management reasons
Consider alternatives if:
- You have pets, smoke indoors, or live in a high-pollution area — filter life will likely be shorter than claimed
- Bedroom use is primary — the 32 dB noise is a meaningful disadvantage at night
- You need a certification (Allergy UK Seal: see Coway Airmega Mighty)
- You want AHAM-verified CADR data — Shark's is manufacturer-stated only
