Levoit Core 400S UK Review (2026): Is the Step-Up From 300S Worth It?

Cost-per-m²-Covered: The Three Levoit Models Compared
The standard question when comparing the 300S and 400S is whether the extra cost is justified. The cost-per-m²-covered metric answers this precisely: divide the 3-year total cost by the room coverage at 3 ACH.
| Model | Unit price | 3-year total | Room coverage (3 ACH) | 3yr cost per m² covered |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Levoit Core 200S | £69.99 | £179.25 | 8 m² | £22.41/m² |
| Levoit Core 300S | £84.99 | £230.70 | 12 m² | £19.22/m² |
| Levoit Core 400S (this model) | £174.99 | £363.57 | 25 m² | £14.54/m² ← cheapest |
3-year total = unit price + (annual running cost × 3). Annual running cost at 12h/day, Ofgem Q1 2026 rate 24.5p/kWh. Filter cost based on Levoit UK pricing at 6-month intervals.
The key insight:
The Core 400S is the cheapest Levoit model per m² cleaned over 3 years — cheaper than the 300S and significantly cheaper than the 200S. The higher unit cost is offset by covering far more room. For any room of 20 m² or larger, buying the 400S is the better economic decision, not just the more capable one. For rooms under 15 m², the 300S is cheaper per m² and right-sized — there is no reason to buy more purifier than your room needs. See the Core 300S review and the 300S vs 400S head-to-head.

What Changed vs the Core 300S
The Core 400S is not simply a larger Core 300S. The specific differences that justify the price step-up:
- CADR: pollen CADR increases from 246 m³/h (300S) to 374 m³/h (400S) — a 52% increase in cleaning capacity. This directly increases the room size the machine can handle at 3 ACH from 12 m² to 25 m².
- Carbon stage: the 400S uses a separate activated carbon pellet filter layer, whereas the 300S combines carbon and HEPA in a single integrated filter. The separate pellet stage allows for larger carbon volume, which matters for smoke and odour performance. See our smoke purifier guide.
- Filter cost: the 400S replacement filter is £24.99 vs £19.99 for the 300S — a £10/year increase at 6-month intervals. This is reflected in the higher annual running cost (£62.86 vs £48.57).
- Physical size: the 400S is noticeably larger. At 24.5 cm diameter and 59.5 cm height, it is a mid-size purifier rather than a compact desktop unit. Placement in smaller rooms can feel disproportionate.
Running Costs
Running costs at 12 hours/day, Ofgem Q1 2026 rate (24.5p/kWh):
- Electricity: £12.88/year
- Filter replacement: £49.98/year (£24.99 per filter × 2 per year)
- Annual running cost: £62.86/year
- 3-year total (including unit): £363.57
Verdict: Buy the 300S or 400S?
Buy the 400S if: your room is 20 m² or larger, you have pets or smoke sources that benefit from the larger carbon stage, or you want the best cost-per-m²-covered Levoit model over 3 years.
Buy the 300S if: your room is under 15 m², you primarily want a bedroom purifier, or your budget is under £100. The 300S is the right-sized machine for the majority of UK single and double bedrooms.
